what is emdr?

EMDR is an extensively researched type of psychotherapy that was developed in the 1980's by Dr. Francine Shapiro. EMDR therapy operates from the belief that the human mind is pre-disposed to heal much in the same way that our bodies do. When we encounter stressful or traumatic events in our lives the distress from the event can remain long after the event is over. EMDR therapy allows the brain to reprocess these memories and in turn resolve symptoms. EMDR is different from traditional talk therapy in that it does not require one to talk in detail about what is causing the distress in order to heal. Instead of focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, and behaviors resulting from the issue, we focus on resolving the core root of the problem.

EMDR has shown to be just as effective, if not more so, then psychotropic medications at symptom management! EMDR also has been shown to work faster than traditional talk therapy, and progress is often seen within the first 3-5 sessions. what happens during EMDR?

Following an assessment, we will determine if EMDR therapy is a good fit for you. Next, we will work through the eight phases of EMDR. EMDR consists of a trained psychotherapist working with a client on a negative image, belief, emotion, and body sensation(s) connected to an event. While processing of the event is occurring, the therapist will guide the client through successive sets of bi-lateral eye movements. A typical session lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. Most clients see progress after the first 3-5 sessions of full EMDR treatment, and feel that the issue has been “cleared” by 6-8 sessions, however each person is individual and treatment length varies from person to person.
