anxiety & depression

If you are in need of assistance learning how to navigate your emotions, cope with anxiety, panic attacks, experiencing a life transition, or having symptoms of depression, I can help you to find more calm and wield your emotions more fluidly.

We will develop treatment that is highly personalized and will target your specific needs, utilizing evidence-based interventions and a person-centered approach. The goal is to leave you feeling empowered and armed with knowledge and skills after each session. Sessions may consist of utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to uncover unhelpful belief systems, teaching body-based relaxation techniques, or emotional processing designed to get at the heart of the issue. The atmosphere is always one of acceptance and safety.

Understand that anxiety and depression often manifest differently for each person, one individual may experience one kind of symptom more than another. If you have any questions at all regarding what you are experiencing, please feel free to reach out.

trauma, ptsd, & stress-related concerns

Have you recognized some of the symptoms of post-traumatic stress in yourself? Perhaps you are experiencing burnout from a job that is taking too much out of you. Whatever it is, stress impacts the mind and body in very real ways. Some common physical manifestations of post-traumatic stress are racing heartbeat, lethargy, poor concentration, and onset of severe panic attacks. Just a few emotional symptoms include anxiety, mood swings, night terrors, and irritability.

A common question many people ask themselves is if their experience(s), "are really considered trauma”. This is due to a pervasive idea that all traumatic events need to look one way, and fit into one box, in order to be considered “truly traumatic”. The latest research into neuroscience and the impact of trauma on the brain say otherwise.

In 2021 the most cutting edge science in the field of psychology is always evolving. There are more empirically validated treatments for PTSD and trauma than ever before, and it is important to weave these treatments dynamically into your counseling.

I utilize a mix of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), Trauma Focused CBT (TF-CBT), and Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), teach several body based relaxation techniques, and provide ongoing education. The goal of using these blended techniques is to assist you in four primary areas:

  • Reprocessing and cognitive restructuring of the traumatic or stressful event

  • Have the ability to re-interpret the body’s physical sensations and use techniques to self-soothe

  • Re-build self-esteem/positive “editing” of one’s old, unhelpful, internal narrative

  • Begin to re-integrate enjoyable activities into one's life again

addiction & long-term recovery

If you're reading this, chances are high that you have either struggled with an addiction yourself or have a loved one who has.

Individuals with addictions to substances, food, sex, or other things have often tried many times to reach recovery, or have had some success for a short while only to fall backward into old patterns. I work with both individuals and small groups to assist you in reaching the root of the addiction.

I take a multi-dimensional approach, considering the many different pieces that come together to impact the development and continuation of an addiction. Together we will uncover what is driving the addiction, learn how to change the unhelpful behaviors maintaining it, identify triggers, prepare for relapse prevention, and begin to integrate new healthy goals.

RELATIONSHIPS & MARITAL ISSUES

Are you feeling stuck in a relationship in your life? Are past painful experiences impacting your relationship in the present? I work with couples to get them back on the right track. I utilize the Gottman Method with my couples, a highly researched and well established form of therapy developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman.

We will work to strengthen your relationship in three primary areas: friendship, conflict management, and creation of shared meaning. What this means is that you and your partner will be encouraged to repair past hurts, replace negative conflict patterns, increase intimacy, and deepen emotional connection.

Research has shown that the Gottman Method is effective in the treatment of same-sex relationships as well as heterosexual partnerships

Some issues that may be addressed in therapy include:

  • Frequent conflict and arguments

  • Poor communication

  • Emotionally distanced couples on the verge of separation

  • For specific problems, such as sexual difficulties, infidelity, money, and parenting differences
